DESTINATION WEDDINGS

When a destination wedding enquiry lands in my inbox I let out a little squeal. A chance for me to create outside of the realms of the norm. Whilst the photos will of course look different, the whole day differs from a UK wedding too. Often split into two days simply because most weddings start at 4/5pm to avoid the mid day sun. I travel anywhere. All over the world. Sometimes I take my family, sometimes I travel alone. Either way, I want more!

As with any of my weddings I always emphasise the details. Usually I’m there hours before the ceremony to get chatting to people, eat, share stories and get to know the wedding party. I find the most interesting things happen at this time. I often find the most important trinkets and bits come with a destination wedding couple and so I always make sure to capture them. After all, they did spend extra baggage allowance on them.

I always try to arrive a few days before the wedding so I have a chance to cut locations, get accustomed to the weather and find the best times for the best light. Obviously flight and calendar depending.

I urge you, if you’re planning a destination wedding to do an activity, get on a boat, bus, tour. They are fantastic for your guests, basking in the sun with a breeze (destination weddings can get hot and sticky so having a lovely sunset boat tour helps that a lot. It also makes great content for your wedding photographs.

I always try and find a few pockets of time for couple shots throughout the day. Typically the sun is the best early evening as it’s setting but I'll work with what I’ve got always trying to conscious of taking you away from your family for too long.

Evening do’s on destination weddings are much later than standard UK ones. The speeches are typically held in the evening before the party starts although I’d be tempted to suggest having them mid day to kick the reception off after the ceremony. This way people remember them and it’s another element to the day. Your choice though. I love a good destination wedding party. Always an absolute blast and it smells delicious - a mix of coconut, cocktails and sunburn - hehe.
